⎨Guten Tag⎬Our Day in Frankfurt

Hi everyone!
Today has been a very, very, very long day. We’ve been (pretty much) awake for going on 32 hours now. After leaving Calgary around 6PM Sunday night, we tried to sleep on our flight to Frankfurt but didn’t get much more than about 30 minutes. We arrived in Frankfurt around 11:30am local time (it felt like 3:30am) and made our way into the city of Frankfurt. We took the train downtown (Hauptwache) to where they have a pedestrian walkway with shops and restaurants.

We walked around for awhile until we realized that I was just WAY too tired, and a little cranky:) so we went to a little park by the Main River and took a little nap.

After about an hour of dozing we made our way around the town again and just took in some sights...

Bike Taxis

Anyone know what kind of tree this is?

An elevator down to the toilets!

St. Bartholomew

In one of the central squares this guy was sitting as if he was levitating. Not sure what to make of that one...

as well as a jazz band.

Of course we got ice cream at Häagen Dazs!

We were only in town for about 6 hours but here’s some of my observations:
-There seems to be a signature cologne that all the guys here wear. Everywhere we went I was getting whiffs of the same thing, that I have never smelled before.
-Lots (and by lots I mean that we saw 4 in 6 hours) of people handing out tracts and preaching on the streets, as well as wearing or holding signs about the coming of the Lord. Check out this guys bike...

-Seems to be a relaxed culture, with lots of people just hanging out in the squares and enjoying the company of their friends.
-Homes here (at least surrounding downtown Frankfurt) are quite small, maybe only 1-2 bedrooms, but with beautiful yards and gardens.

We took the train back to the airport and as we came up the escalator we were greeted by about 1000 people protesting the airport expansion. Men, women, and children were blowing whistles, banging on drums, yelling, and holding up signs that said that the airport was making too much noise and they didn’t want flights to be leaving as late in the day. It was quite interesting. I caught a photo of the tail end of the line...

And now, after a short but turbulent 45 minute flight to Brussels, I’m exhausted, and I’m going to bed.
Until next time,
Carlin (and Stephen)

  2. At least the toilets were found via elevator and not the ones shaped like a 6 in the middle of the street that the men use in some cities. That was shocking the first time I saw it... Glad you're having fun! And I know they have them here now, but Magnum bars are where it's at when it comes to European ice cream!
