⎨ɓiɓɓe⎬Day Seven

Nyiiri & Haako: A traditional dish
Haako is a sauce that is made of leaves, onions, tomatoes, meat, ground pepitas, and a cube of bouillon.
It can be prepared a couple of different ways using leaves from different kinds of plants.
Nyiiri is a ball of either rice, millet, corn.

Lots of people here eat this dish at every meal. As opposed to North American culture where we view food as entertainment, the people here simply view it as sustenance, so it is common for them to eat the same thing at every meal. Nyiiri and Haako is typically served like this on a communal plate from where you would pinch off a piece of the Nyiiri, flatten it in your fingers and use it to pick up some of the Haako.

We really enjoyed this dish. It's very filling and it has a lot of flavour. It smells really good when it's cooking too!

This afternoon we had the privilege of visiting a family who had just had a baby 10 days ago.
We drove to their compound and then had to walk back through a maze of rooms and houses until we reached their little house. The compound was quite large, had narrow passageways, and there were kids everywhere. There are about 85 people living there in total, all of whom are related. All the children crowded around the doorway to see the white people who had come to visit! (Someone kept shooing them away but they kept coming back)

Here's me and the new baby! She was the tiniest thing!

Here's the baby with her mamma in their little one-room home.

The little outfit and the bag of soaps was a gift from Treven and Melanie

It was so neat to visit with this family. They live in such a humble space with so little, and yet they graciously welcome us into their home. They are so proud of this new baby and wanted us to hold her. I was so blessed to hold this tiny creation in my arms and pray that God will protect her and help her grow strong and healthy.

Blessings,

Carlin & Stephen

Tidbits:
- 43ºC today. We are feeling really sluggish.
- We tried a local "beef jerky" type of thing today.
