We enjoyed a more laid back day today to recover from our trip.
In the afternoon we walked with Melanie to the market as the car is still in for repairs. It was nice to just walk through the town and through the market and get a taste for how the local people buy their food and other goods. I didn't want to take out my camera in the market and cause a ruckus so I just caught a few random snapshots while I had our little camera hidden under my veil:
One of the little shops. Most of the market looks like this and the whole place is covered with tin. |
Moto taxis. Here's a riddle of the day: How many people can you fit onto a moto? I took a picture of this one cause the seat is covered in bubble wrap. I thought it was funny. |
Bags of nuts and grains that you can buy in bulk |
I wanted to buy some sesame seeds from the market as they grow here and are quite inexpensive. We weren't sure where to find them so a couple boys led us through a maze of shops and passageways between houses to a shop that sold them in a bag similar to this. You pay about 700 franks, or about a dollar per bowl full (about 5 cups). I bought a big bag full and decided to try to carry it home on my head like the local women do. I think I got the hang of it! It helped that the seeds conformed to the shape of my head. And I even made some guys day. He saw the white girl carrying a bag on her head and he got a huge smile on his face and wanted to shake my hand. I would post a picture but I look like a huge dork so I'll spare myself the embarrassment.
Until next time,
Carlin (& Stephen)

ReplyDeleteYou MUST post that picture! You looked so elegant walking through town with that bag of sesame seeds on your head, it's only fair for everyone else to see too!
